A Month of Bhajans
The Tamil month of Margazhi falls between December 15th and January 15th. It is a religious month for Tamilians. In my village two changes take place unique to this month. A Village sweetmeat
Every state in India has its favorite sweetmeat and every village has its own special dish. In my village its murrukku or chakli in Hindi. Any hour of the day if you land up at somebody’s house they will serve you with murrukku. Not only is it easy to make but it does not need to be kept in a fridge. All you need to do is to keep it in an airtight ... more...

The Cauvery won't come to Tamil Nadu
For twenty years the borewell near the dhobhi ghat had supplied water to Panickanadarkudieruppu. It was near the red sand desert that bordered the village. The water was very tasty. Many villagers said that it was as good as the drinking water in Mumbai. There were taps at regular intervals on all the roads and even in the small by lanes. 10% of the... more...

Recently I went on a road trip to Goa; it was after a long time that I was taking the wheel outside Mumbai, and despite recent visits the drive remained a daunting prospect. So I downloaded the map for the resort I had to go to, gave myself a timeline of reaching the place by 4 pm. NH17 was thankfully not packed, and since we left home by 4.30 am I...  more...

Bhagvad Gita as Dharma Shastra???
Just read in the TOI today that a High Court Judge has recommended that the Bhagvad Gita be made the national dharma shastra.I am not a scholar of the Gita, and I have only given it a cursory read. Daniel Devitto et al
I have always enjoyed watching Danny Devitto. I equate him with Malayalam cinema’s Srinivasan. Danny is an actor, producer, director. Our Srinivasan is an actor, script writer, and producer too. Modern-day corporate slavery.
Several major Indian corporations, even those that claim to be very patriotic, use corporate bonds to retain employees. A corporate bond is nothing but a different name given to 'bonded labour'.  This is very similar to the indentured labour used by the British government to employ workers in plantations around the world several decades ago.Enginee...  more...

About Milk-Spits and Professionalism
My life, if I give a gist is a list of never-ending activities. My thoughts on Vande Mataram controversy
I am fiercely patriotic and will willingly die for my country's safety,as my forefathers did in the past, but my patriotism cannot be gauged by singing a song or not...Vande Mataranm is merely a bhajan to me.... why it should take on such a grand proportion is baffling.   The freedom fighters sang many other songs too, with equal warmth & gusto...S...  more...

The Year that was 2005 - Dave Barry
Wilma, Rita, Katrina: No matter how you stack it up, 2005 blewIt was the Year of the Woman. But not in a good way.Oh, I'm not saying that men did nothing stupid or despicable in 2005. Of course they did! That's why we call them ''men.''But women are supposed to be better than men. Women are the backbone of civilization: They keep families together,...  more...

Cuisine..Indian
We were three. One can prepare only Rasam and the other 2 only Sambar.  And all the three are vegetarians.  And imagine in a country where meat is for breakfast and well..for dinner too.  The nearest Indian grocery is 15 miles where you get vegetables  and it gets rotten by the time you reach the place where you live.  This is the place where we st...  more...

Gag, gag, gag!
What's with the BCCI?Virender Sehwag says he misses Ganguly, says the Indian team plays too much cricket, he is gagged. The BCCI warns him not to speak on such issues.Sachin Tendulkar has his first net in months. The media is not invited. When they land up they are asked to shoot for afar.So TV has a sideways angle of Sachin playing a few shots. So...  more...

What a beaut!
Driving down a picturesque hillside on the west coast recently, we stopped for a hot cuppa, utilising the chance to stretch the weary legs as much as look around for a loo. As one walked unsteadily towards the small shed nestling in the forests, a patch of bright colour caught the eye. Thinking it would probably be a piece of garment left behind by...  more...

In last one week Mumbai bore the brunt again! Violence, hatred and life coming to a standstill! The media cried out that Raj and his party is goonda. Do We Have the Guts?
I am convinced that India will take another 100 years to reform itself or we need exceptional strong leaders. No great reform will happen after this attack in Mumbai. India has all the power to fight back, unfortunately Indian government has no guts to attack these terror camps like US did in Afghanistan after 9/11. Pathetic Indian Law System is a...  more...

Are more H-1B visas good for India?
By the end of this month, if will be clear if the US Senate Immigration Reform Bill introduced to decide whether H-1B visa limit should be increased from 65,000 to 115,000 has been defeated or allowed to sail through successfully. Everyone says an increase in the H-1B visa limit will help Indians the most. Will it, really? But more on that in just ...  more...

Modi, a hero
Though I also operate within the realms of Indian English media, though I am aware of its “pseudo-secular” credentials, I was baffled by the kind of lop-sided, anti-Modi coverage of the Gujarat elections, especially in the electronic media. The English newspapers and news channels declare themselves as “unbiased and secular” while they act as if th...  more...
